Stonegate Helps Ship NASA's Shuttle Training Model

Stonegate Elementary recently helped NASA and Sealed Air prepare to ship the Space Shuttle Training Model from Houston to Seattle. Sealed Air worked with Stonegate students to draw a huge grid to map the protective packaging for shipping.

Stonegate Elementary volunteered to help NASA and Sealed Air prepare to ship the Shuttle Training Model (Full Fuselage Trainer) or FFT. The FFT is a full scale mock-up of the Shuttle built in the 1970's to train all the Shuttle crews. The FFT, which has been housed in Houston, is being moved to Seattle, Washington to the Museum of Flight.

Sealed Air, a company located near DFW Airport, has been contracted to use their packaging foam to cushion the FTT during transport aboard the Super Guppy. The Super Guppy is a converted B-29 bomber which has been modified to carry large aircraft parts and rockets in its cavernous cargo bay.

Sealed Air used Stonegate's gym to layout the locations of the foam blocks on a grid drawn up by the 5th grade math class. The Fifth Graders watched a slide show presentation given by Steve Stewart of Sealed Air. Mr. Stewart taught CAD drafting at the HEB ISD Technical Education Center before retiring and going to work for Sealed Air as a designer and Mold Technician.
