Trinity Trojans Make Hot Yoga Part of Their Training

First it was the Haka and now it is hot yoga. The award-winning Trinity Trojan football team has made hot yoga part of its training. Trinity High School counselor Kathryn Lorusso and math teacher Beth Pizzuto led two groups of players through introductory classes the last Saturday of summer vacation. Lorusso and Pizzuto are avid hot yoga fans and have 12 years of experience between them.

These Trojan football classes are a "sampling" of postures and therefore an abbreviated version of the official 90-minute Bikram yoga classes. An official Bikram classroom would be heated to 105 degrees, but the high school classes are heated to 90 degrees for 30 minutes. The request for these classes came from Trinity Head Coach Steve Lineweaver, who himself has taken Bikram yoga. He wanted his players to receive the benefits of yoga, such as added flexibility, relaxation, and easier healing and recovery from injury. The players will take several more classes this fall.

NBC Channel 5 sent a reporter to cover the class and some players talked about what they hope to gain from yoga.
