Betty Cook has been a Trojan Talk mentor here for years and years and years. She is beyond dedicated and has a huge impact on our students-- She really takes the time to get to know each one. She takes their information sheet and commits the info to memory and is able to greet every student by name and knows a little something about each of them. Also, the way she sets up our class is wonderful. She has the kids sign up to co-lead different lessons throughout the year then the kids are given the curriculum and told the date they'll be leading. I love to see them take charge, step up, and lead their classmates in the discussions and activities. After they lead, Mrs. Cook takes the time to mail them each a thank you card telling them how wonderful they did. She finishes the year with a celebration for our seniors. Each graduate gets a "diploma" and a moment to tell the class goodbye/give any last words before leaving. There's always a few students who cry and all say how much they've enjoyed their time in Trojan Talk. They also get to walk away with a stick figure cut out that everyone writes a little note on for them.
I consistently hear our students say things like "I love Trojan Talk..." and "Mrs. Cook is the best!"....Mrs. Cook absolutely creates a successful environment for the kids to thrive in. We tackle tough issues and our kids feel safe and confident enough to open up and share. The kids always look forward to seeing her and genuinely respect and appreciate her. Oh—and ask ANY one of them and they'll tell you she makes the best homemade brownies in the world!
