| Local media outlets aimed their spotlight on the HEB schools, with several teachers and programs receiving media coverage in the first week of the school year.
The most recent article was "First-Day Jitters," with a focus on a new kindergarten teacher and her new students experiencing stress on their first day of school. The article followed 23-year-old Brittany Pruitt, kindergarten teacher at North Euless Elementary School, as she greeted students both afraid and excited about the prospect of starting school for the first time. The article was published in the August 24 edition of the Star-Telegram. The August 20 edition of the Star-Telegram featured the Welcome Center in a article entitled "Center's Coordinator Says Goodbye," in which Acela Paliotta explains her decision to retire after working on her "labor of love." The Welcome Center helps immigrant students adjust to life in America. Paliotta plans to open a consulting business to focus on bilingual education and immigrant student issues. The first day of school at Hurst Junior High School began with Dana Benton dressing like an Academy Award. Benton, who dresses up in elaborate costumes each year to welcome students, was featured on KXAS-TV. On Sunday, August 17, both the Star-Telegram and the Dallas Morning News published articles on the District and its programs. The Star-Telegram featured a story about Diana Williams, English teacher at Trinity High School, who traveled to England with several students in the International Baccalaureate program. The Dallas Morning News featured an article about new programs in HEB ISD for this year August 17. The article, "First seniors to finish IB studies," highlighted IB's second year in the District, as well as expansion of the Core Knowledge curriculum to Harwood Junior High School and the addition of extended care at all 19 elementary schools. Readers may search both newspapers to find these articles at www.dfw.com for Star-Telegram articles and www.dallasnews.com for Dallas Morning News articles. Copies of these newspapers may also be on file at public libraries. |
