| Each year, students are asked to participate in National Make A Difference Day, a day of volunteering held the last Saturday in October. This year, HEB students are being asked to work on a project anytime from October 1 - 25 for "HEB Celebrates a Month of Caring."
Here are a few upcoming student volunteer projects designed to help the HEB community: * River Trails Elementary School will host a "Shower of Love," a baby shower for infants born at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Students, staff and parents are asked to donate new or gently used baby gifts such as clothing, blankets, bottles, formula, diapers, and other supplies from October 6 - 10. Mary Stokic, assistant principal for River Trails, said they hope to make a significant impact with this project. "Last year over 5,500 babies were born at JPS Hospital. More than half of the infants born lacked basic clothing and items in their home for a healthy start at life," Stokic said. * Bedford Junior High School will have two volunteer projects. Students and staff will be asked to donate money from October 6 - 10 for the American Red Cross. The Student Council will collect donations during cafeteria lunch periods. *The following week, October 13-17, Bedford Junior High School will collect donated items for PTA Clothes Closet, during advisory periods. Advisory teachers will be asked to keep a tally of donated items brought by their students each day, and at the end of the week, the winning advisory class will be rewarded with a prize for their hard work. The PTA Clothes Closet provides new and gently used clothing for students in need. Last year, the Clothes Closet provided clothing to more than 700 students in the fall semester alone. More than three million Americans volunteered their time for Make A Difference Day in October 2002. "HEB Celebrates a Month of Caring" is sponsored by the HEB ISD Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) program and the HEB Council of PTAs. |
