The HEB ISD Suzuki Strings Honor Orchestra played before an enthusiastic crowd of educators at the recent national Core Knowledge conference in San Antonio. The Honor Orchestra is made up of elementary school students who were selected from the District's Suzuki Strings program.

Suzuki Strings and Core Knowledge are two Schools of Choice programs that HEB ISD offers parents. These programs, along with Foreign Language Immersion and International Baccalaureate, enrich intellectual experiences beyond the traditional academic setting.

SUZUKI STRINGS

Since the fall of 2001, selected elementary students have had the opportunity to play the violin, viola and cello using the internationally renowned Suzuki instructional approach.

CORE KNOWLEDGE

The Core Knowledge program is based on the curriculum suggested by E.D. Hirsch, Jr. in his best-selling books, Cultural Literacy and The Schools We Need and Why We Don’t Have Them. The program includes the basic principles of constitutional government; important events of world history; essential elements of mathematics and of oral and written expression; widely acknowledged masterpieces of art and music; and stories and poems passed down from generation to generation.

PRE-K CORE KNOWLEDGE

The Pre-K Core Knowledge program addresses five specific areas: Physical Well-Being and Motor Development (Movement and Coordination); Social and Emotional Development (Autonomy and Social Skills); Approaches to Learning (Work Habits); Language Development (Oral language, Reading and Writing); Knowledge Acquisition and Cognitive Development (Mathematics, Science, Music, Visual arts).

SPANISH IMMERSION

The Spanish Immersion program makes the District’s immersion schools unique in their ability to provide students with a multilingual education. Immersion schools incorporate the Spanish curriculum, along with the best of traditional instructional programs, to provide a linguistic gateway to students seeking to become leaders in the global marketplace.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

The International Baccalaureate is a demanding pre-university course of study designed for highly motivated and academically talented high school juniors and seniors. The program has earned a reputation for rigorous internal and external assessment, giving IB diploma holders access to the world’s leading universities. Both HEB high schools offer the IB program.
