Making It Easy to Learn About a Job That Is Not Easy
Candidates Learn Demands and Rewards of School Board Service

The Texas Association of School Boards is making it easy for school board candidates to learn more about the demands and rewards of school board service. They will offer a free Webinar on three different dates that are about serving on a school board. The workshop will be presented via the Internet on February 26, March 6, and March 24 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. CST.

The workshop will provide interested community members and individuals thinking about running for the board with a better understanding of what is involved in being elected and serving as a local trustee.

Mark McHargue, a senior consultant with TASB and former school board member and election lawyer, will explain board members’ key responsibilities and outline the qualities necessary for effective service.

Topics to be covered include how serving as a board member can add value to the education process in your community, what it’s like to be a trustee, key responsibilities of the board, division of authority with staff, how to campaign constructively, and where to find more information about being a candidate. The workshop also will include interviews with other experienced school board members highlighting the many aspects of board service.

The workshop is open to anyone at no charge; however, registration is required. For details or to register, check the TASB Web Site at LTS.tasb.org/candidates. For more information, call Mark McHargue in TASB’s Leadership Team Services, 512-467-0222, extension 6163, or email mark.mchargue@tasb.org.
