Early Literacy (Kinder, 1st, 2nd)
Early literacy is the cornerstone of education success. In their first years of elementary school, students learn to read so that they may read to learn in later years. HEB ISD monitors early literacy progress in Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade using three assessments from the Amplify Reading 3D system:
- DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) - a formative assessment of five foundational literacy skills: First Sound Fluency, Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency, Nonsense Word Fluency, and Oral Reading Fluency
- IDEL (Indicadores Dinámicos del Éxito en la Lectura) - a Spanish version of DIBELS, intended for students who are English Learners
- TRC (Text Reading and Comprehension) - an early literacy formative assessment that goes beyond foundational skills to assess students' understanding of what they read
Teachers monitor these datapoints for individual students throughout the year. The chart below tracks the overall progress of early literacy across entire grade levels, district-wide.
Note: This data lines up with Success Measure 1.2B in HEB ISD's Strategic Plan.
