Substitute Teacher Process

Want to substitute in HEB ISD?  We would LOVE to have you join our team!  Please follow the steps below in order to become a substitute.  

Step 1: Apply online to become a substitute.

Substitute PAY varies based on college hours, degrees, and certifications.  All substitutes will be activated as Teacher Assistants unless transcripts and/or certifications are provided.  

  • Please be sure to attach transcripts and/or certifications to your application.
  • Please refer to the Substitute section of the Supplemental Duty Pay Schedule for exact rates.

Step 2: Receive information on how to complete fingerprints for a background check.  

After your application has been reviewed, you will receive detailed information in an email about fingerprinting, which includes instructions on how to schedule an appointment.

  • Please note, fingerprinting fees are the substitute’s responsibility, and cost is approximately $48.  
  • NOTE: Do not try to schedule your fingerprinting appointment until you have received a code from our office.

Step 3: Complete New Hire Checklist

After your background is reviewed, eligible applicants will be emailed details to complete the New Hire Checklist. The checklist includes new hire paperwork, and both the required Substitute Orientation AND Compliance Training.  

Step 4: Schedule and attend a required New Hire Meeting.

After you complete your new hire checklist, you will be emailed a link to schedule your required New Hire Meeting. Please bring documentation for I-9 verification; examples include a current driver’s license and social security card; or current Passport.  All documents need to be original, valid, and not expired.

  • If you have not attached or emailed your transcripts/degree evaluation or certifications to the application, please bring these items to this meeting.  
  • Note: Your photo will be taken at this meeting to receive a badge.

Step 5: Receive Frontline Absence Management Welcome email, and begin to substitute! 

 

Please note these items to eliminate possible delays:

  • You will receive email communication including detailed information at every step of the process.  Make sure you are checking the email used on your application and its spam folder.
  • Ensure the affidavit is complete and accurate.
  • The amount of time a background check can take is often dependent on how quickly the appointment is scheduled and completed, and the availability of the substitute.

Substitute teacher compensation 

  • Degreed & certified:
    • Individual days: $115/day
    • Long-term (20+ days): $160/day
  • Degreed, non-certified: Individual days: $105/day
  • 30+ college hours: $95/day
  • $300 stipend for 20 consecutive days
