International Baccalaureate

An HEB ISD Schools of Choice Program

International Baccalaureate (IB) is a prestigious opportunity offered to students through HEB ISD's Schools of Choice program. IB is the highest academic curriculum for high school students and is recognized by universities for its depth and challenge. The college-level coursework and projects required aim to develop students who flourish intellectually, emotionally, and ethically.

HEB ISD was the first school district in Tarrant County to offer the IB program. Starting in 2002 and continuing today, the district offers IB through mature programs at both L.D. Bell and Trinity High Schools. Students can prepare with advanced coursework offered at all five HEB ISD junior high schools: Bedford JH, Central JH, Euless JH, Harwood JH, and Hurst JH.

About International Baccalaureate

IB is short for International Baccalaureate. The IB Program is an internationally-recognized program established in 1968 and noted for its depth and challenging curriculum. It is a rigorous pre-university course of study leading to assessment in six subject areas. A high-quality curriculum that aims to encourage critical thinking by the study of traditional disciplines, IB also encourages an international perspective. Beyond completing college-level courses and examinations, IB students are also required to engage in community service, individual research, and inquiry into the nature of knowledge.

Applying for the IB Program in HEB ISD

Students who live in HEB ISD can take advanced coursework in junior high school to prepare for their future application to the IB Program. These students will continue taking advanced courses during their sophomore year (10th grade) at either L.D. Bell or Trinity High School.

HEB ISD students may enroll in the IB Program during a window that typically opens in fall of their sophomore year.

Students applying to transfer into HEB ISD for IB or IB preparation programs use a slightly different timeline, which follows the district's Transfer & Schools of Choice application process that opens in January. We aim to notify transfer students by mid-March so that they are prepared to enter the IB program at the beginning of their junior year.

For more information about applying for International Baccalaureate from outside of HEB ISD, contact Cheryl Harris, Coordinator of Advanced Academics, at CherylHarris@hebisd.edu.

What is Schools of Choice?

HEB ISD's Schools of Choice programs go beyond the "core" curriculum. These limited enrollment programs focus on specific, special topics. Students can grow their artistic talents, explore cutting-edge advancements, and develop skills to compete with a global workforce.

Each program has its own set of requirements and its own academic path to completion, giving families the freedom to decide which path is right for their child.
