Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC)

The Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) is a leadership and citizenship program sponsored by the United States Navy and offered at the high school level.

NJROTC is not a military recruiting program and does not require students to join the military after graduation. The program’s mission is to help students develop character, discipline, responsibility, and leadership skills that prepare them for success in college, careers, and life.

Program Goals

NJROTC focuses on helping students:

  • Build strong leadership skills

  • Develop good citizenship and personal responsibility

  • Improve self-discipline and teamwork

  • Gain confidence and respect for themselves and others

These skills benefit students regardless of their future career plans.


Requirements to Join

To participate in NJROTC, students must:

  • Be enrolled at the school (typically grades 9–12)

  • Be able to participate in regular physical training

  • Follow school and NJROTC standards of conduct

  • Wear the NJROTC uniform properly on designated days

  • Maintain acceptable academic and behavioral standing


What Students Can Expect

NJROTC is taught as a regular class during the school day. Instruction and activities include:

  • Leadership and citizenship education

  • Naval history and basic maritime concepts

  • Physical training

  • Drill and marching (formations and ceremonies)

  • Uniform inspections

  • Community service opportunities

Students may also choose to participate in extracurricular activities, such as:

  • Drill team

  • Field trips

  • Competitions and special events (as scheduled)


Time Commitment

  • NJROTC meets during a scheduled class period

  • Cadets wear the uniform one day per week

  • Optional after-school practices, events, and competitions are available

Additional time commitments depend on a student’s level of involvement, such as participation in teams or leadership positions.
