2018 Inductees
Distinguished Former School Board Member -- B. Glen Whitley
Judge Glen Whitley presides over the Tarrant County Commissioner’s Court. He’s served as County Commissioner, a member of the HEB ISD Board of Trustees, as well as on the Hurst Planning and Zoning Commission and the Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Board. Judge Whitley is past president of the National Association of Counties, the Texas Conference of Urban Counties, the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the Regional Transportation Council. He and his wife Brenda are active members of First United Methodist Church of Hurst have three grown children and seven grandchildren.
Distinguished Volunteer -- Jan Morgan
Jan Morgan and her husband Randy founded BridgesWork, a 501(c)(3) bent on participating in the lives of children and helping them identify future dreams and building bridges to move dreams to reality. BridgesWork hosts summer enrichment camps, once-per-month Saturday sessions, and a one-week summer leadership academy. They also send youth on mission trips, offer homework assistance, and match up youth, volunteers and mentors. Since 2012, more than 75 youth have participated in the Leadership Academies and more than 100 volunteers and mentors have been brought in to work with local students. All programs are offered at no charge.
Distinguished Trinity Graduate -- Dr. David Lloyd
Dr. David Lloyd is the chief medical officer at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital HEB. A Trinity High School graduate, Lloyd spent nine years in the Air Force before attending The University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Lloyd has served as a hospitalist for Texas Health Physicians Group and medical director for care management for North Texas Specialty Physicians (NTSP). In his current role, Dr. Lloyd is focused on patient and employee safety. He and his wife Jennifer attend All Saints Episcopal Church in Fort Worth and have two rescue dogs.
Distinguished Former District Employee -- Sherilynn Cotten
Sherilynn Cotten spent the last 45 years of her career filling the roles of teacher, administrator, instructional specialist, and school improvement consultant. She spent 34 of these years in the HEB ISD, retiring from the district in 2007. She was Vice Principal and Principal of Hurst Junior High, and was named the HEB ISD Instructional Principal of the Year in 2006 and HEB ISD Principal of the year in 2007. After retiring from HEB ISD, Sherilynn formed her own educational consulting company and works regularly for Lead Your School, an innovative school improvement company.
Distinguished L.D. Bell Graduate -- Steve Moore
Steve Moore was the Hurst Chief of Police until retiring in 2018. A proud product of HEB ISD schools, Chief Moore started with the Hurst Police Department at age 20 and moved through the ranks until being named Chief of Police in 2008. Chief Moore focused on improving programs, particularly improving services for the mentally ill population. The program he designed is now replicated by other police departments across the country. Chief Moore and the department have received local and national recognition for leadership and innovation in law enforcement.
Distinguished Community Leader -- Corky Cobern
Corky Cobern has dedicated over four decades to helping HEB youth find success, both on and off the field. Corky spent 45 years coaching a collection of MidCities Pee Wee Football, Tri-Cities Baseball, and MidCities Basketball. He was an integral part of the committees tasked with creating the MidCities Youth Activities Council (MCYAC) and the HEB Sports Hall of Fame. Many of his players have gone on to successful Division I, Division II, junior college, Arena Football and NFL careers. His legacy leaves a mark on the lives of thousands of HEB students.

Distinguished LD Bell Graduate
Karen P. Tandy
Tandy earned her bachelor and law degrees from Texas Tech University. For more than 30 years, she served as a federal prosecutor in positions with the US Department of Justice, including Associate Deputy Attorney General, Director of the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Forces, and Assistant US Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia and in the Western District of Washington. She was nominated by President George W. Bush, and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on July 31, 2003, as the first female Administrator of the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Since 2007, Tandy has served as Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for Motorola Solutions, Inc. (MSI), a high tech Fortune 300 company.
Distinguished Trinity Graduate
Scott Sheppard
Sheppard is a Euless native and fifth-generation member of First Baptist Euless. He majored in architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington. After college, Sheppard had a career in the construction industry until entering full-time ministry. He served on staff at First Euless for 11 years. In 2009, Sheppard was reassigned to launch 6 Stones Mission Network. The mission of 6 Stones is to build a coalition of churches and community businesses and organizations that provide solutions to meet the community’s needs. 6 Stones Mission Network facilitates Operation Back2School, Black vs. Blue food drive, Night of Wonder, and they are a member of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD Adopt-A-School program.
Distinguished Community Leader
Larry J. Darlage, Ph.D.
Darlage was born and raised in southern Indiana. He developed a love for science early in life when he heard about Sputnik in October, 1957. Darlage received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Indianapolis and teaching and research fellowships at Iowa State University, where he completed a Ph.D. In 1978, Darlage moved to Dallas to help start Brookhaven College. In 1996, Tarrant County College hired Darlage to serve as the president of the Northeast Campus in Hurst. His leadership has helped the campus grow from about 9,000 students to more than 17,000. Pharmacy Technology and Long-term Care programs were added to complement the many Allied Health programs already at the campus.

JR Goad
Goad is a Sweetwater, Texas native. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Hardin-Simmons University. He played high school and college tennis, and he played on the Texas Junior Davis Cup in 1950. In 1956, Hardin-Simmons University named Goad to their Athletic Hall of Fame. After a 35-year career with the JC Penney Company, Goad retired and earned his real estate license to begin a career with Century 21 Mike Bowman. He dedicates his time with the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD Adopt-A-School, Volunteers In Public Schools, and HEB ISD Education Foundation Board of Directors. He has been a volunteer reader at Wilshire Elementary School for more than 20 years.
Distinguished Former District Employee
Hulin “Hoot” Smith
Smith was raised in Grand Saline, Texas. He served in the Navy in WWII and with scholarships and the GI Bill earned degrees from Texas A & M University and East Texas State University Commerce. He was named head football coach at LD Bell High School in 1962. Smith was the first full time Athletic, Health and Physical Education Director in Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, serving from 1968 – 1995. Smith’s athletic and physical education programs were state and national models. He helped bring full-fledge gymnastics to HEB ISD and to the state. He had the first athletic trainers on high school campuses and he helped develop the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association.

John Henry Clanton
Clanton is a native of Wichita Falls, but has been a resident of Hurst since 1966. He received a Bachelor of Science from Midwestern University and a Master of Education from the University of Texas at El Paso. In his 27 years in Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, Clanton was a coach and then a vice principal at Central Junior High School. He was Vocational Coordinator at Trinity High School, Vocational Director for HEB ISD, and he founded Adopt-A-School. Clanton served on the Board of Trustees from 1995-2004, serving as both Vice President and President. His time on the Board ushered in International Baccalaureate, Suzuki Strings, Spanish Immersion and other enrichment programs.

Buddy Whittington
- The accomplished guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist emerged in the local DFW music scene as a teenager - forming his own band, "The Sidemen"
- Joined John Mayall's "Bluesbreakers" as lead guitarist in 1993 - following in the footsteps of former Bluesbreakers Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor.
- In 2008 Whittington launched his solo career, releasing three albums to date.
- Currently tours with his band and performs throughout the United States and Europe.
- Has appeared on Jay Leno's Tonight Show
- Longtime volunteer in HEB ISD schools.
Distinguished Trinity Graduate
Amy Sorlie
- Moved to Los Angeles to pursue a writing career after graduating from UTA.
- Her articles have appeared in "American Way" and other national publications.
- In 2010, her first feature film screenplay went into production in South Africa and London.
- Sorlie's film, "Dark Tide", starring Halle Berry, will be released in 2012.
- Sorlie currently has more film and television projects in development.
- She visits her family often and makes time to speak to students in HEB schools.

Georgia Kidwell
- Hurst-Euless-Bedford resident since 1967.
- Has a passion for health and education issues.
- She spent 30 years in HEB clasrooms as a substitute teacher and then as a teacher
- Kidwell leads the student scholarship committee for the Rotary Club of HEB.
- She also oversees the Rotary's Four Way Speech contest for local students.
- In 2010, the second JPS/HEB ISD school-based clinic was named the Georgia Kidwell Child Health Care Center.
Distinguished Volunteer
Holley Hendrickson
- Hendrickson has been a volunteer in HEB schools since the early 1990s.
- When her son pased away in 2002, she devoted more time to giving back to HEB schools.
- Hendrickson has continued to volunteer at Spring Garden Elementary School, especially with the annual sixth grade production.
- Currently serves as a Trojan Talk mentor at Trinity High School.
- Hendrickson took volunteering to a new level when she led the effort to pass the HEB ISD spring 2011 bond proposal.
Distinguished Former District Employee
Jerry Longwell
- Longwell began teaching in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD in 1961.
- He was the L.D. Bell Band Director for seven years.
- Served as District's first Director of Fine Arts, a position he held for 18 years.
- Longwell held numerous positions with state music education associations and state textbook committees.
- He is a member of the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame and TMEA Region 5 Band Directors Hall of Fame.
Distinguished Former Board Member
Nancy Rippy Welton
- Hurst-Euless-Bedford resident since 1963.
- Welton was an active school volunteer and has a Lifetime Membership in PTA.
- She was elected to the HEB ISD Board of Trustees in 1967.
- During her board tenure, she oversaw the construction of numerous HEB schools.
- She also helped implement policies to keep pace with issues that came with the rapid increase in student enrollment.
- When she retired from the school board in 1979, her tenure was the longest time served by an HEB ISD Board member.

Bliss Dodd
• Began teaching special education in the HEB ISD in 1967.
• District's first Director of Special Education in 1969.
• Testified at state and federal levels on behalf of special education programs.
• Was a member and president of the Texas Council of Administrators of Special Education (TCASE).
• Received the first TCASE Hall of Honor Award in 1991 for her dedication to the education of special needs children.

David M. Kunkle
• Began his police career in Dallas in 1972.
• Became Grand Prairie Police Chief in 1982.
• Served as Arlington Police Chief and then as assistant city manager.
• Served as Dallas Police Chief 2004-2010.
• Helped found and is Executive in Residence at the Caruth Police Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Michael Muhney
• Actor on television show, "The Young and the Restless."
• Has numerous film credits and has co-written and produced a film.
• Has appeared on several television shows as a cast member and as guest star.
• Member of MENSA.
• Has returned to Trinity to offer advice to students in the Theatre Department.

Mary Martin Frazior
• President and CEO of the HEB Chamber since 1997.
• Director of the HEB Economic Development Foundation.
• Serves with the North Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Association and Tarrant Regional Transportation Coalition.
• She supports HEB ISD through Adopt-A-School, Education Foundation, and School Health Advisory Committee.
• Received the Arts League Shining Star Award for her service to the HEB ISD Education Foundation.

Dave Burns
• Navy officer with three years' sea duty on destroyer escorts.
• Had a railroad career of 33 years
• Began volunteering at KEYS Learning Center upon retirement in 1995.
• Works with students at KEYS who are at risk of dropping out of high school.
• Volunteers at KEYS four days a week, donating more than 1,000 hours each year.

Lois N. Nixon
• Taught at Central Junior High School and Trinity High
School and retired from Trinity as an assistant principal.
• Volunteered with the renovations of the Old Bedford School
• Member of the HEB ISD Board of Trustees from 1994 - 2001.
• During her board tenure, the District established a mentoring program where retired teachers support new teachers
• Tenure also saw the establishment of the HEB ISD Education Foundation and International Baccalaureate in both high schools.

Served 39 combined years in HEB ISD as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal; Was the first Principal of Bedford Junior High School, which opened in 1969 - 70; While Principal at Bedford Junior High, the school received numerous honors and awards; Served as an officer of several local and state education organizations; Awarded State and National Lifetime PTA membership.

Dr. Jeff Burnett
Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church of Hurst since 1991; Joined the staff of First Baptist Church of Hurst in 1979; Volunteer with Santa USA; TEAMS mentor with LD Bell High School since the program began in 1991; Has served on the HEB ISD Board of Trustees since 1997 and is the current President.

Dr. Randy Alkire
Research scientist at Argonne National Laboratory's Structural Biology Center; Co-author of 30 scientific publications; Co-author of two scientific patents, with a third patent pending; Has received numerous awards from research and scientific organizations; Invented a brand new double-ended deck of playing cards, marketed by the U. S. Playing Card Co. as Crazy Rummy in 1998.

Mary Lib Saleh
Elected the first female Mayor of Euless in 1993, and has been Mayor ever since; Instrumental in the growth of the City of Euless; During tenure as Mayor, the City of Euless has won awards from Business Week, Money magazine, and Playful City USA for the city's quality of life; Has received numerous local, area, and state awards; She is a Texas Lifetime member of PTA.

Served a total of 17 years on the HEB ISD Board of Trustees, from 1967-1975 and 1997-2003; Served as a teacher and administrator at Trinity High School; Was the first female school board member in North Texas; During her first tenure on the school board, helped the District through a period of rapid growth; During her second tenure, ushered in programs such as International Baccalaureate, Spanish Immersion, Suzuki Strings, and Core Knowledge.
