The 5th annual Introduction to Design Engineering and Analysis Seminar (IDEAS) Science Day was held at the Buinger CTE Academy on Saturday, February 4. To host the event, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Advancement (HOLA) Lockheed Martin partnered with the Buinger Career & Technology Academy, the Trinity SHPE Junior chapter, and SHPE UT-Arlington.
Almost sixty 6th-12th grade students attended, with support from 31 volunteers! This year's science activity workshops featured a Spaghetti Tower and Boat Design competition. The first activity divided students into teams of four with roles like "project manager" and "procurement buyer". They then worked together to design and build the most affordable and creative tall tower possible. Lunch came with an opportunity to ask questions to SHPE professionals and college students from SHPE UT-Arlington and SHPE TCU. In the afternoon Boat Design workshop, students designed and built creative, affordable, and efficient boats using popsicle sticks and foil. The day closed with an awards ceremony and advice on connecting their dreams with STEM degrees.
