This summer, HEB ISD received a government-sponsored STARTALK grant to host a summer language program for Hindi, Chinese, and Arabic at Central Junior High School, where these languages are taught during the regular school year. Only two programs in the DFW area received this grant for this year; our district has received this grant 11 years in a row.
Our theme this year was Startalk 2018 - "Better Together", similar to the districts' theme from 2017-2018. The STARTALK program not only provides students an opportunity to explore, but also, encourages students to learn a LCTL (less commonly taught languages) in a fun and engaging learning environment. The program's goal is to promote language learning through providing pedagogical training and resources to new and experienced teachers, and to develop interest and instill a desire amongs learners to learn a Startalk language. More than 140 students were enrolled in this unique program.
Our students had an enriching cultural experience through visiting restaurants and authentic markets, learning about products, practices, and perspectives of the culture studied, and comparing it with their own. Students participated in many cross-cultural activities; guest performers, cultural trainers, and community members were invited to discuss and share their expertise with the students.
