Central Junior High Engineering Students Design Rockets
Posted 09/13/2018 03:19PM

The Honors Engineering students at Central Junior High School tested various rocket designs in a computer simulated environment. Students in Mr. Bryan Harston's classes manipulated variables such as fin geometry and parachute deployment volume. After making adjustments students tested the changes in a virtual reality setting. The ability to repeatedly change-test-change their designs exposed students to the way engineers actually work. After the student design teams identified optimum rocket designs, they competed in head-to-head 3-D simulations using real world physics. The computer system tracked and scored variables such as max velocity, max altitude, recovery time, acceleration, and many other data points. Students vied for the highest rank possible within the simulated competitions. At the conclusion of the Virtual Engineering Cycle, Central Junior High Engineering students output precision drawings of their designs, including to-scale fin and fuselage attachments. From those drawings, students created actual working model rockets which they will fly outdoors at the conclusion of the Engineering unit.
