Students Study STEM through Golf, Thanks to District Partners
Posted 02/05/2018 01:25PM

A group of 16 students and teachers from L.D. Bell, Trinity, and KEYS High Schools had the opportunity to apply elements of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in a creative, fun way at Top Golf in Fort Worth on December 28. The two-hour personalized training session with a certified golf professional was made possible by HEB ISD's partnership with 6Stones Mission Network and Dalworth Restoration. The participants were selected by school counselors who identified them as students who have earned respect and trust in their schools and community.

Although several of the participants were first-time golfers, they were able to gain an understanding of the game through these practical STEM concepts:

  • Science: Applying physical force to the ball through the club generates the ball's speed and path
  • Technology: Housing a sensor inside each golf ball measures when a ball hits its target
  • Engineering: Applying lift, drag and weight determines the aerodynamics of each shot
  • Math: Changing the arc and length of the swing will determine how far the ball travels

Special thanks to our generous partners for providing this unique educational opportunity for our students.
