The American Heart Association has called HEB ISD a "district of livesavers" for the school district's work to champion CPR training and cardiac response plans. Both organizations are encouraging all school districts to turn bystanders into lifesavers and improve outcomes from cardiac arrest outside of hospitals.

HEB ISD leads the state as Texas' largest school district to work with the American Heart Association to adopt a districtwide Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP). This plan reflects HEB ISD's commitment to wellbeing and safety through access to life-saving equipment and skills at all schools, including:

  • Increasing the number of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) on campuses
  • Enhancing curriculum to exceed Texas' CPR graduation requirements
  • Providing Hands-Only CPR demonstrations during staff development days
  • Conducting CPR and AED drills with staff and students at all campuses
  • Working with trusted organizations to support the plan, such as the American Heart Association, Project Adam, and Texas Health HEB

“HEB ISD remains dedicated to the safety of our students, staff, and community and is proud to be a District of Lifesavers,” said Superintendent Joe Harrington. “Having a plan that empowers people to act quickly and correctly during a cardiac emergency can save lives. We’re starting with HEB ISD and advocating for other districts across Texas to work with the American Heart Association and implement a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan.”
